WASHINGTON, DC – On Tuesday, Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections filed a public comment with the Arizona Secretary of State noting several legal problems with the state’s proposed revision to the election procedures manual, including its failure to address illegalities in the current version. RITE is currently in court challenging the current manual’s illegal expansion of signature-match exemplars. While Arizona law requires that ballot signatures be matched with those in the voter’s “registration record,” the current election procedures manual unlawfully permits ballot signatures to be compared with signatures outside the registration record, diluting the rigor and integrity of the signature match process.
“Arizona officials hoped to skirt judgment in RITE’s case by promising future fixes. We now know what those promises are worth. Instead of complying with the law, the Secretary of State has shamefully doubled down on its error. RITE is calling on the Secretary of State to revise the election procedure manual and focus on protecting the integrity of Arizona’s elections.”
