Washington, D.C. – Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (“RITE”), a non-profit organization that supports litigation to protect election security and integrity, today filed an amicus brief, or a “friend of the court” brief, in the United States Supreme Court in support of the Commonwealth of Virginia’s effort to remove self-identified noncitizens from its voter rolls.
Recently, under the direction of Governor Glenn Youngkin, the Commonwealth of Virginia has taken steps to remove self-identified noncitizens from its voter rolls. Activist groups and the Biden-Harris administration’s Department of Justice sued Virginia officials to stop the state from cleaning up its voter rolls, claiming that Virginia’s practice violates federal law’s prohibition of certain systematic programs to remove voters close to an election.
“When people tell the Commonwealth of Virginia that they are not citizens—Virginia should be able to believe him,” said Derek Lyons, President of RITE. “The federal government’s efforts to compel Virginia to expose its elections to non-citizen participation is an abuse of authority. The Supreme Court must step in to put an end to this assault on commonsense and on the integrity of our elections.”
