Washington, DC – April 29, 2025 – Restoring Integrity and Trust in Elections (RITE) has filed an appellate brief in the Vermont Supreme Court supporting two Burlington voters in their challenge to the city’s adoption of noncitizen voting.
RITE originally filed suit in 2024 after Burlington amended its charter to allow noncitizens to vote in elections that have implications for all Vermont taxpayers. After the trial court ruled against the voters, RITE appealed, arguing that Burlington’s charter amendment violates the Vermont Constitution’s requirement that only United States citizens may vote on matters “that concern the State of Vermont.”
As RITE’s brief explains, allowing noncitizens to vote in elections affecting education budgets violates the Vermont constitution and undermines the statewide school funding system designed to ensure equal educational opportunity for all Vermont students.
“Vermont’s Constitution is clear: when it comes to votes concerning state matters, only U.S. citizens have the right to decide,” said RITE spokesman Tim Murtaugh. “RITE is proud to stand with Vermont citizens to defend the rule of law and fight the left’s creeping endorsement of noncitizen voting.”
